Nation Mission Sub-committee

Summary: First Church’s Nation Sub-Committee of Mission manages the support and financing that the church provides to a number of organizations in varied areas throughout the United States.

Current Focus: Hurricane Katrina Relief.

CHILD WELFARE
The Nation subcommittee of Mission supports Kemmerer Village, a Presbyterian child welfare facility that includes residential care for troubled children, foster care, special education needs and additional services. On-site Christian education is available to all of the children.

CHRISTIAN MINISTRY FOR THE INCARCERATED
First Church, through the Nation Subcommittee of Mission, contributes to Prison Fellowship Ministries, a Christian ministry program directed at prison inmates. This program also aids ex-prisoners in rehabilitation, works with children of inmates, and also serves the victims of crime.

EDUCATION
The Nation Sub-Committee supports education through a number of different organizations:
Dubuque Theological Seminary
with our funding directed specifically toward scholarships for Native American students in the residential studies program at the seminary.

McCormick Theological Seminary, a Presbyterian Church USA seminary, and First Church have a long-standing relationship. Funding is directed to scholarships for seminary students.

Theological Education Fund is a Presbyterian Church USA program that provides general financial support for all of the seminaries in this denomination.

Pikesville College is a Presbyterian-related liberal arts college that serves students, many of them needy, primarily from communities in the mountains of Appalachia.

ELDER CARE
The Nation Subcommittee of Mission support is provided to the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church USA, and Older Adult Ministries of the Presbyterian Church USA.

Both of these organizations care for retired ministers, surviving spouses, and other retired church workers. Older Adult Ministries also develops programs and materials aimed at the unique needs of older adults in Presbyterian churches around the country.

HURICANE KATRINA RELIEF
First Church continues to assist the people of the Gulf who are still trying to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

We partnered with the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to help the many families of this congregation, as well as Reverend Tim Brown and his wife, who lost their homes to the storm.
