Finding Your Place

The goal of the Membership Committee is to welcome you to ministry at First Church and to help you “find your place” as together we seek to serve God as disciples seeking to follow His son and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our guiding and grounding principles that plan and shape our direction and mission are:

Recognizing the power of Christ to transform lives, the core mission of First Church is to:
     1.      Proclaim Christ’s message
     2.      Provide a community of spiritual nurture, and
     3.      Promote God’s vision of justice.

This statement serves as our congregation’s identity as we seek to become God’s sent-out people. They guide us as we determine how we allocate talent, resources, and time. We look forward to charting our direction together as grateful stewards and loving family members over the coming years. We welcome you to join us in that ministry!

As you decide to become a member of First Church you will be challenged to rethink what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in this day and age.

A faithful member accepts God’s call to be involved in the mission and ministry of God’s church by:

  • worshipping;
  • praying together and studying the Bible;
  • supporting the work of the church with time, money and talent;
  • demonstrating a new quality of life within and through the church;
  • responding to God’s activity in the world through service;
          living responsibly and working in the world for peace, justice,
          freedom and human fulfillment.

Membership Classes

The membership class takes place in two gatherings.

First Gathering:  The first begins with devotions and prayer.  We sense God’s presence working in our midst as we get to know each other through sharing our faith journeys. The history of the First Presbyterian Church, Lake Forest, is shared by a church member.

Second Gathering: We open with prayer and a discussion of First Church’s core mission, seeking to meet God’s needs through the service of our congregation. We discuss the stewardship of our time, talent and money; your story, the church’s story and God’s story – of salvation. We end by sharing our individual faith statements.

Sunday Morning Gathering: You are introduced to the Session and voted into membership. You are received into church membership in worship immediately after the Session meeting. You are welcomed by the congregation at a reception after worship.

Won’t you join us in our common mission as we seek to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ and his church?
