Christian Ideas

What Is It?

A small group discussion series aimed at reading classic works on basic Christian topics.  The format is that of read-and-discuss.  Participants read the works planned for discussion ahead of time and discuss them at the evening gatherings.  Selections are aimed at two to three hours reading time per week, and are grouped into themes that have been explored throughout the history of Christianity.  Pre-Christian and non-Christian material is also included as it fits with the topics.

Who Should Attend?

Sessions are open to anyone who desires to explore the rich traditions of the Christian faith, particularly as expressed by its most influential writers (Aquinas, Augustine, Milton, Bunyan, and more).  A willingness to read and discuss are the only pre-requisites.  This series is particularly aimed at Christians who have an interest in these ideas or works, but find reading them independently a bit intimidating.

Newcomers, guests, and curious onlookers are welcome at any time.

How Will it Work?

The texts do the teaching.

Discussion sessions are on Tuesday evenings, 7:00 to 8:30, at First Presbyterian Church, Lake Forest (Room 215).  Topic 5 runs from 23 September and will extend into 2009.

The discussion has the aim of:

-         First, understanding what the author is trying to say.

-         Second, assessing how this presentation agrees or conflicts with our own beliefs, church doctrine, and prevailing thought.

The discussion leader’s role is to

-         Stimulate discussion where needed with questions

-         Help attendees clarify the presentation of their thoughts, as needed

-         Keep discussion focused on the topic at hand

The leader is neither intended nor qualified to be an expert on the material.  The texts do the teaching.
